The Theoretical Approach Towards Nationalism Essay

Introduction Nationalism has been a very important issue tackled in the modern era. At first, it was seen from a positive standpoint, especially at a time when there was a struggle against colonialism. Apparently, every struggle for national independence had nationalist aspirations among the people as prerequisites. The theoretical approach towards nationalism, however, are varied. The variety is primarily the reason why there are such kinds of nationalism that lead into ethnic wars, ethnocentrism, racial tensions, and religious discrimination. On the other hand, there are also some nationalist struggles that developed into socialist movements. Primordialism Primordialism is a theoretical approach to nationalism that argues that nations are natural phenomena. This basically means that the establishment of a nation is simply caused by the unification or bonding of individuals or peoples with a number of commonalities, such as culture, language, or environment. Its idea is that it is the other way around. Consequent political arrangements are caused by commonalities in culture, religion, or language. As such, the most basic factor that leads into nation-building for the primordialist is ethnicity. The primordialist believes that common ethnicity and the bond that goes along with it is the basis for a nation.
